What Are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are thin laminates (think “acrylic fingernails”) which usually cover only the surface of the teeth people see when you smile and talk (the facial surface).

Veneers are used to cover teeth that are discolored, misshaped, or arranged imperfectly.  They can be used to close spaces between teeth instead of orthodontics.  Porcelain veneers provide a long lasting solution to many cosmetic concerns we may have about our teeth, they look great, feel smooth, and are quite strong.

What are veneers made of

Veneers can be made of either ceramic or composite resin material.  Ceramic veneers are produced in a laboratory and bonded to the teeth at a separate appointment from the preparation appointment.  Composite resin material can either be made in a laboratory and bonded on at a later date (like ceramic veneers) or built directly onto your tooth by your dentist. Traditional porcelain veneers require greater removal of tooth structure, but arguably deliver the best cosmetic result.

No Prep Veneers

More recently, a thinner, less invasive porcelain veneer has become available which produces good esthetic results, no sensitivity, and no chance of the tooth developing inflammation or infection secondary to the procedure.  These “No Prep Veneers” are created with the help of a laboratory and then bonded to the surface of your teeth.  This procedure is relatively new, but seems to provide good longevity.

As you might imagine, building a veneer for your tooth is very challenging from an artistic and technical perspective. However, dentists who do them can often produce outstanding results.  Please contact our office and ask for an Esthetic Consultation.  During this time, we will explore the results available to you and guide you in your choice based upon your lifestyle.
